Channel 12 WISN Coverage on the R22 (Freon) Shortage

We teamed up with WISN News (Channel 12) to inform customers about the recent R22 shortage. R22 Refrigerant (Freon™) is a common refrigerant used in today’s air conditioning units. Back in 1990, federal laws were set to mandate the use of chlorine-based refrigerants. Almost 30 years later, our nation is at a 90% reduction in production limits on the R22 refrigerant. This means that the price is through the roof! Industry experts predict the cost of the R22 refrigerant to continually increase 200-300% in cost over previous years. There’s a very good chance that if you do need refrigerant for your AC this summer, it might not be available.

Us Wisconsinites typically don’t see summer until June. In the southern portion of the US, summer starts much earlier, and at this time many air conditioners are already being used. Therefore, the R22 shortage may not allow you to fix your broken air conditioner.

What can you do about the R22 shortage?
