Notice One of these Undeniable AC Issues? It’s Time to Call in the Pros!

There truly is no worse time for your AC to fail than in the height of summer. It’s bad enough when you step into your home and there’s no refreshing cool air to greet you, but did you know that the air inside of your house can become even warmer than the air outside? That’s right. Picture a steamy day in the middle of July and then imagine that the temperature in your living room is several degrees hotter!

Mr. Holland’s Home Services is here to help (really, we’re just a phone call away!)

Your air conditioning is supposed to act as a silent partner in your battle against summer’s heat, but there are a few undeniable (and sometimes noisy) signs that your AC is in trouble.

YOUR AC IS PRODUCING WEIRD SOUNDS (OR SMELLS)

When your AC is in ship shape it should be so quiet that you almost forget it exists at all! While some very gentle noises are completely normal, if you start to hear anything louder (or more unusual), it could be a sign that something inside the unit is loose, clogged, or damaged. If things get even noisier, it may mean that your outdoor unit is corroded or aging beyond repair.

Maybe your air conditioning isn’t making sounds but instead, it’s starting to… stink? If strange aromas are rising from your AC, it could be the smelly result of burned-out wiring insulation, faulty fan motors, or even mold or mildew inside the unit.

Don’t hesitate to call in a pro ASAP! If your system is circulating dirt, mold, and mildew throughout your house it can result in health issues for you and your family, including asthma and allergies.

YOUR AC IS BLOWING WARM AIR (YUCK!)

There’s nothing worse than sweating while staring at a thermostat to confirm that, yes, you did set the air to cool. So, why is warm air blowing through your vents?

The culprit could be a refrigerant leak or a broken compressor, but there are a few steps you can take first before calling in an expert:

  1. Triple-check that you have, indeed, set the AC to cool
  2. Confirm that your filter is clean (and if not, replace it!)
  3. Make sure that any debris surrounding your outdoor unit has been removed (so it can’t cause any blockage)

If you’ve done all that and warm air is still blowing into your home, give Mr. Holland’s Home Services a call!

YOUR AC IS LEAKING WATER

You don’t have to be an HVAC expert to know that leaking water is never a good sign. If you find a small amount of water outside of your AC unit, it could just be condensation; but pooling moisture—or signs of discoloration in the water—could be the result of a refrigerant leak and that needs to be handled right away.

YOUR AC IS CYCLING TOO FREQUENTLY

Another undeniable signal that something is wrong with your air conditioner is the sound of it cycling frequently. Your AC should not constantly start and stop. A healthy unit will blow steady air and only turn off once the room has reached the desired temperature. Short cycling can put extra stress on your air conditioner and might even cause it to break entirely, so be sure to call in a professional to diagnose the issue.

YOUR AC HAS LIMITED AIRFLOW

A common problem for air conditioners is limited or insufficient airflow. What good is cold air if it’s not blowing out of the vents enough to cool down your home? Typically clogged ductwork or a broken air compressor is to blame. You’ll need an experienced HVAC technician to repair your unit because clogged ductwork left unattended can cause serious (and seriously expensive) damage.

YOUR ENERGY BILL HAS SPIKED (YIKES!)

Most air conditioners today are made to be energy efficient, so if you spot a sudden spike in your power bill, it’s likely that your unit is not functioning properly. You may want to do a broader energy audit of your home, but we suggest starting with an annual comprehensive air conditioning inspection performed by one of our trained professionals. Our thorough “white glove” inspection ensures that your air conditioning unit has been fully cleaned and serviced—long before the dog days of summer arrive.

If you notice any of these issues with your air conditioning unit, it’s time to call in the pros and there’s no one better to serve you and your family than Mr. Holland’s Home Services.
