Wisconsin Smoke Detector Requirements
Homeowners must install at least one smoke detector on each floor level, including basements and finished attics, for one and two-family homes. One detector should be placed between adjoining bedrooms and outside any other sleeping areas. Detectors should also be installed near the ceiling of each stairway on each floor level.
All smoke detectors should be installed according to the manufacturer’s instruction, which typically calls for:
- If mounted on the ceiling, then at least 4 inches from the wall.
- If mounted on a wall, then between 4 and 12 inches from the ceiling.
- Mounting on the bottom of exposed basement ceiling joists.
- Mounting at least 3 feet from any window, door, or AC equipment where drafts might prevent smoke from reaching a detector.
- Installation away from kitchens where cooking could cause false alarms and disconnection. You can purchase smoke detectors with temporary, reduced sensitivity switches to install in or near your kitchen.
- Mounting within 3 feet of the highest part of a sloped or peaked ceiling.
You should not install smoke detectors in areas that experience temperature extremes or have excess humidity, such as bathrooms, unheated garages, or closed attics.
