HOW DOES A BOILER WORK?
Every heating system is unique in how it functions. You might be wondering, “What makes a boiler a boiler, then?”
Most boilers that supply heat to a home function by:
- Triggering when the thermostat reports a temperature below your set level.
- Heating water by igniting a gas burner, until the water turns to steam.
- Using a pump system to push the heated steam through pipes throughout your home.
As the steam moves through your home, heat gradually leaves the steam, entering the air in your home instead. This is what causes the radiant warmth that keeps you and your family cozy throughout the winter. As the heat leaves the steam, it will eventually lose too much heat and return to its liquid state again: water.
The water flows back through the system until it reaches the boiler’s combustion chamber, where it can be reheated and turned into steam for repeated cycles. Most boilers are fully enclosed systems, which means they do not need to intake new water. Instead, the same water is used, again and again, ultimately saving you money on utility costs.
