Protecting Your Basement From Flooding
Groundwater often reaches a sump basin through drain tile installed around the foundation. As the water level rises, the float activates the pump and sends that water through a discharge pipe away from the building. This cycle helps keep water below the basement floor.
Heavy rain, rapid snowmelt, a high water table, and sudden surges of stormwater can all increase the amount of groundwater around a Milwaukee-area foundation. A properly sized pump provides an important layer of protection, but it doesn’t correct every source of basement water. Foundation cracks, poor grading, clogged exterior drainage, and sewer backups may require separate solutions.
Signs of a Failing Sump Pump
Don’t wait for water to reach the basement before checking the system. The following operating changes can indicate that the sump or one of its supporting components needs service:
- The basin fills, but the pump doesn’t start: The float may be stuck, the switch may have failed, or the pump may not be receiving power.
- The pump runs constantly or cycles every few minutes: Continuous operation can result from heavy groundwater flow, an incorrectly positioned float, a faulty check valve, or a pump that can’t keep up.
- Operation has become unusually loud: Grinding, rattling, humming, or strong vibration may point to debris, a damaged impeller, motor wear, or a loose component.
- Little or no water leaves through the discharge line: A blockage, frozen outlet, separated pipe, failed check valve, or weak pump can prevent proper discharge.
- Water returns to the basin after each cycle: Backflow often indicates that the check valve is missing, stuck, damaged, or installed incorrectly.
