May is National Electrical Safety Awareness Month, and it’s a great time to focus on the importance of electrical safety in our homes!
Here are 17 tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe:
- Check all electrical cords, cables and extension cords for frays, cracks or any damage
- Avoid running extension cords across doorways or under carpets

- Never yank an electrical cord from the wall
- Replace wobbly switches and outlets
- Avoid overloading outlets
- Never use extension cords as permanent outlets
- Lamps on level surfaces and away from things that can burn
- Never use electrical equipment near water
- Unplug outlets when not in use
- Test your smoke detectors to make sure they are working properly
- Never put anything other than an electrical plug in an outlet or outlet covers or caps to protect children
- Unplug all unused appliances
- Check the correct wattage is being used in fixtures and appliances
- Call an electrician for a complete electrical system inspection if you notice there are frequent problems with blowing a fuse, tripping circuit breakers, tingling feeling when touching an electrical appliance, discolored or warm wall outlets, a burning or rubbery smell coming from an appliance, flickering or dimming lights, sparks from an outlet
- Don’t allow dirt or dust to accumulate on electrical equipment
- Schedule a whole home electrical inspection!
