Beware of Duct Cleaning Scams
Watch out for…
Each year, thousands of homeowners are scammed by air duct cleaners. Several years ago, I was called to a home in Grafton, Wi (for privacy reasons, let’s call her Jane Doe) to investigate a duct cleaning gone wrong.
Upon arriving, I could not help to notice the amount of black dust and debris throughout this home. The gal that lived here was literally crying and completely distraught over this. I am not exaggerating when I say that her home was a catastrophic mess. She had to move out and stay at a hotel until the home was cleaned and restored.
After I examined the ducting and the so called duct cleaning, I discovered that the air duct cleaner actually disturbed all of the debris in the duct system. There was no duct cleaning performed. What they did was blow air into the system thus agitating all of the debris that had built up over the past 50 years or so. Once, Jane Doe started to use her furnace again the blower system blew all of the debris throughout her home causing a nightmare.
Needless to say, she did hire my company to re-do the entire job.
Pay attention to the following…
As spring springs and summer summers – folks across the U.S. will be hiring air duct cleaners to perform this service as a way to rid their home of the ductwork nasties!
The two biggest scams are as follows:
Scam #1 – The air duct cleaner will mail a direct mail piece or use an online coupon promotion via online social media, monthly coupon mailers or online coupon sites. The offer may say something like this “whole house duct cleaning for $99 or $199”. After this, they show up in an unmarked van. They go to the basement, make some noise and then kindly show up at the kitchen table with a quote for $800 stating that your ducting needs a bunch of other cleaning. This is horse feathers! AVOID all mailers that offer dirt cheap offers.
Scam #2 – They will call your home posing as a local HVAC company – like Mr. Holland’s. They lead you to believe that they are your local HVAC service provider and will offer you a $49 or $99 AC tune up and air duct cleaning combo. Again – Horse Feathers!
Here’s the deal…
If you can’t afford to have the ducts cleaned properly… Then wait until you have the money. I always have believed that no duct cleaning is better that one done the wrong way!
Buyer beware – a proper duct cleaning will always cost more than $400 regardless of your home size. Often times we offer specials during slower times or when we have openings. A duct cleaning done the right way will cost between $400 and $1000.
Hire a duct cleaner that gives a 100% guarantee that if it’s not done right the first time that it will be redone for FREE.
Ask for before and after pictures.
Only hire those that offer a true duct cleaning service and not some baloney method for $199!
